"I just want to say one word to you: Plastics."

In the 1970s the Heathkit Models ID-1890, ID-4001, and ID-5001 Digital Weather Computers were the state-of-the-art.  We designed the weather sensors from scratch, and the plastic injection mold for the wind cups was a complicated close-and-twist type of mold.

The times are a-changin'.  The original mold has been retired and no longer can be used to recreate these original plastic parts. While we were having a new modern mold created, we improved on the original design, to give you many more years of service from your Heathkit Weather Station.

It's all in the details.  We contracted with an established plastic injection molding company to create replacement wind cups that, when assembled, will replace the original one-piece set.  In addition, we selected a new and better material that should last much longer than the PVC-type material we originally used 40 years ago.  We added glass fiber to the plastic in this new material, to increase its strength. We also added a UV inhibitor, to reduce the aging caused by exposure to the sun.  Best of all, we made it modular: With this new wind cup design, any individual broken cup now can be replaced, at a much lower cost than replacing the entire wind cup assembly. (Of course you can repair it yourself. It's a Heathkit.)
